Charley "before"
This is "Charley" - he was hit by a car in Tampa and received treatment at Florida Veterinary Services for sacroiliac and hip injuries.  Charley is a young Corgi Mix and is a very nice little boy, but we were unable to find his owners.

Thanks to the generous assistance of Corgi lovers across the state, Charley has made a full recovery and has a loving home!

Penny - Reflections of a Foster Mom

July 7, 2007, you entered my life through Corgi Rescue.  I was told you were at least 10 years old and needed fostering, possibly long term, due to poor health.  Your owners turned you in because they felt you didn't like them anymore.  When I got you, you were thin, weak and had little interest in anything, including food.  You seemed a bit more interested after I gave you a bath, cleaned up your crate and washed your bedding.  You ate, had a drink and went into your crate for the night.  Next morning, I discovered that you would not come out of your crate without a leash attached to your collar!  Being the creature of habit that you were, it took months to modify this behavior.

Within several days of your arrival, I took you to see a veterinarian so we could find out what medical problems, if any, you had.  Besides a skin infection, your bloodwork revealed that you were in the early stages of renal failure.  I left the vet's office, medication and special food for you in hand, to try to see if I could help turn things around for you.  You took the medication OK but didn't like the new food.  A week later, you were back at the vet's office, this time with an attack of pancreatitis.  Even on a clear liquid diet, you didn't seem to be improving so I made an appointment to have you put to sleep.  That day, August 1, was probably the most horrible day of my life.  I decided to go home for my lunch hour to give your some clear chicken broth so that you would not be hungry when I took you to the vet's office that evening.  You took the broth like you were starving and I knew it was not your time to go yet.  I cancelled the appointment and asked Rescue for a different brand of food.  That truly was the beginning of your return from near death.  By the beginning of September, you had gained weight and your bloodwork showed your kidneys to be insufficient rather than borderline failure!

You continued to improve and it was a joy to watch you.  You didn't miss your crate and you finally learned that there's life without a leash!  You and Sam, my Corgi, loved to be outside in the yard and you gained strength trying to run fast enough to keep up with him!  My greatest hope for you was that someone would adopt you and give you a forever home.

However, at age 12 and with health problems, there was no serious interest so you continued to stay with me.  No one seemed to want an older dog whose life expectancy might not be very long.  I would loved to have been able to adopt you myself but I have other obligations that would not allow me to do that.

Then, about a month ago, I noticed that you were sleeping a lot more and you stopped running.  You were never a good eater, but it was harder to get you to eat.  Your body began to emit a smell that's associated with kidney failure so I requested another blood test to find out the condition of your kidneys.  The test showed that your kidneys had, indeed, failed and it was just a matter of time.  You came home with me and I did my best to make you comfortable before I knew the inevitable needed to happen.

Penny was with me for just under a year and I've never regretted my decision to accept her into my home as a foster dog.  Her final year was a good one and she crossed Rainbow Bridge in peace.

"Zen" is a "special needs" Cardigan Welsh Corgi, who came to us in the summer of 2007.  After spending some rehab time with SCR member Sam Bates of Clearwater, he worked his way into everyone's hearts and has now become a permanent member of the Bates family.

To help compensate for his arthritis, Sam got Zen his very own "little red wagon" to travel in!  ►

My name is Faith.  I am between 4 and 6 years old.  I was dropped in a "dump box" in a rural shelter.  I was loaded with parasites, had some bad skin problems, underweight and very frightened. I was intact and had a growth on my foot.  I also had a urinary tract infection.

Yes, I know I look like a movie star with my shades but fact is my foster mom got these to help me.  I am 90% blind and need these to protect my eyes and preserve what little vision I have left.  Thanks to the help of some dedicated volunteers I have been spayed, had the growth removed from my foot and had my vaccinations.  I've been on antibiotics for my skin and UTI, had some medicated baths and am eating a very good diet now.
People call me amazing.  Through it all I have sported my characteristic Corgi smile and fully trusted those who wish to help me.  I am a happy girl now that someone realizes what a special girl I really am.  I have my own personal fan club now so I am not available for adoption.
